Air Development Squadron 51 (also referred to as Fleet Air Squadron 51 or VX-51) is a unit in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force(JMSDF). It is a part of the Fleet Air Force and is based at Naval Air Facility Atsugi in Kanagawa prefecture. In 1989 the squadron received Sikorsky MH-53E aircraft, designated S-80M-1. The initial requirement for S-80M-1 helicopters for the JMSDF was 12 helicopters. Lengthy negotiations during a time of high inflation escalated costs resulted in funding for only 11 helicopters. The Japanese Sea Dragons are very similar to their US Navy equivalents, but lack the inflight refueling probe. The Japanese Sea Dragons have a secondary transport capability and may be assigned disaster-relief missions, which are a high priority for the Self-Defense Forces.
Designed to meet a US Marine Corps requirement for a heavy-lift transpory helicopter to replace the CH-37 Mojave, the CH-53 was first flown on October 14th, 1964. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
