The C-130 Hercules is a medium/long-range combat transport aircraft. A spawn of the US Air Force in 1951, the C-130 still remains one of the most widely used transport aircraft by the Armed Forces. Nearly forty C-130s were produced yearly throughout the entire 1990's. When empty, the aircraft weighs 75,743 pounds. However, the Hercules can carry nearly 100,000 pounds for a maximum take-off weight of 175,000 pounds. "Fat Albert" transports the Blue Angels" equipment and personnel to all show sites. The special show aircraft also features Jet Assisted Take-Off (J.A.T.O.) by which eight solid rocket boosters are attached to the sides of the C-130 (four on each side) to allow for quicker take-off and elevation. Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
