On 1 March 1956 the The Air Forces of the National People's Army (Luftstreitkrafte der Nationalen Volksarmee or LSK) was officially established as part of the National People's Army, following the GDR's entry into the Warsaw Pact alliance. The LSK aquired 12 MiG-19S and 12 MiG-19PM aircraft from the Soviet Union that served until 1969. "Red 872" was one of two MiG-19S aircraft painted in a special scheme for the 5th FAI World Aerobatic Championships at Magdeberg, GDR in 1968. Both aircraft crashed during training however and neither flew during the championships. A particularly unusual feature of early model MiG-19s was the long, chin-mounted pitot tube that could hinge upwards to protect it from accidental damage by ground crew and vehicles.
