MM403 was part of one of the most famous operations of World War II, the Amiens prison raid. Taking place on the 18th February 1944, and code named 'Operation Jericho', British intelligence learnt that some of the prisoners were to be executed by the Germans and so 2nd Tactical Air Force (TAF) was intructed to raid the prison the day before. 12 FB.VI's of 464 RAAF and 487 RNZAF breached the walls and as a result of the raid 255 prisoners, half of whom had been awaiting execution, escaped. The aricraft was crewed by Flt. Lts Tom McPhee and Geoffrey Atkins (464 Squadron - based at Sculthorpe) . It was one of the 5 aircraft of the unit that breached the walls of the main building and destroyed the guards quarters. Designed in a private venture as a high-altitude, high-speed unarmed bomber, the de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was first flown on November 25th, 1940. The Mosquito was one of the most successful aircraft of the Second World War. Only the Ju 88 could rival its versatility. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, the all-wood Mosquito was as fast as a fighter and could carry the payload of a medium bomber. During its lifetime, the Mosquito was used in varying roles, which included night fighter and ground attack. It carried radar systems and cannons, and there was even a carrier landing version. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
