Lockheed Martin C-130J-30 Super Hercules, operated by the Royal Australian Air Force as A97-450 with No. 37 Squadron. Powered by four Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprops driving six-bladed propellers, the C-130J provides tactical airlift for troops, vehicles, equipment, humanitarian supplies, and aeromedical missions. The stretched C-130J-30 offers increased cargo volume while retaining the Hercules family's excellent short-field and austere-runway capability. No. 37 Squadron operates the RAAF Hercules fleet from RAAF Base Richmond in New South Wales. A97-450 represents the modern generation of a transport type that has served Australian military aviation for decades. Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack.
