Hans 'Assi' Hahn was the tenth highest scoring Western Front Luftwaffe ace. One of his regular aircraft with III./JG 2 during the late Summer/ early Autumn of 1942 has on it the Kommandeur's 'Cockerel Head' emblem and the Gruppenstab's unusual style of tactical markings, white outlined in black, with the Gruppe vertical bar aft of the fuselage cross extended into a wrap around band. 'Assi' Hahn's 68 confirmed Western kills, including four 'heavies' made him one of the famous aces of the Channel Front. He later added 40 more Eastern Front victories when posted to the command of II./JG 54 before he crashed behind enemy lines. Designed by Kurt Tank, the Fw-190A was first flown on June 1st, 1939. This small, yet ferociously-powered aircraft was fast and maneuverable and packed a fierce armament package earning it the nickname "Butcher Bird". The wide landing gear, excellent visibility and high-altitude paddle-bladed propeller endeared it to pilots familiar with the shortcomings of its predecessor - the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Some of the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter aces flew the Fw 190. Many variants were produced during the war, with the most notable being the inline-engine equipped and longer-nosed 190D, known as the "Dora." © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
