Worried about the possible downfall of the Syrian Government the Soviet Union signed an agreement and began to supply arms and aircraft to the Syrian military in April 1978. The MiG-25PD Foxbat E was being delivered as well as MiG-23MF. MiG-25 Foxbat As were being upgraded to Foxbat E standards and were called MiG-25PDS. Throughout the 1980s Syrian had numerous encounters with Israeli fighters. Since the 1990s MiG-25PDs have been concentrated at Tiyaz in central Syria with the 5th Squadron and others transferring their MiG-25PDs to the 1st Squadron. Designed as a high-speed, high-altitude interceptor to counter the threat posed by the US XB-70 Valkyrie bomber, the MiG-25 was first flown on September 9th, 1964. The airframe was designed around a pair of massive Tumansky R-15(B) turbojet engines, capable of propelling it to a top speed of around Mach 3. The Foxbat is one of the fastest production aircraft to enter service. In addition to the interceptor variants, numerous reconnaisance variants were also produced. The MiG-25 has seen service with several air forces besides Russia including those of Iraq, Egypt, Libya and Syria. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
