The USAF has three locations where they provide adversary training programs. They are located at Tyndall AFB Florida, Langley AFB Hampton Virginia and Holloman AFB Arizona. As of 2012 there are 508 T-38 Trainers in operation. T-38 67-14833 MSN T6029 started out as a T-38A but like others was upgraded to a T-38C with new engine and system components. The T-38 is used to provide adversary operations at a fraction of the cost of a second F-22 Raptor and it also reduces hours on F-22 equipment. Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The pressurized tandem-seat cockpit offers excellent visibility for both student and instructor and provides a comfortable training environment. Being both lightweight and nimble, the T-38 is used extensively to prepare military pilots for high performance jet aircraft and has earned the nickname "White Rocket". The T-38 was famously flown by the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron during the 1970s and proved popular with NASA who use it as an astronaut trainer and chase-plane. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
