VS-28 "Gamblers" was commissioned in 1960 at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The VS-28 mission is to locate and counter enemy submarine threats. In January 1974 they moved to NAS Cecil Field, Florida. After deployments aboard the USS Saratoga and USS Independence,VS-28 began the first of 4 cruises on USS Forrestal in 1986 that lasted until April, 1990. VS-28 gained the nickname "Hukkers", a derivative of "Hunter/Killers". Story has it that Hunter Killer belt buckles were ordered but arrived spelled HUKKERS. VS-28 was deactivated October 1, 1992. Designed to meet the US Navy's VSX requirement for an Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft to replace the S-2 Tracker, the S-3 was first flown on January 21st, 1972. Designed for long-endurance missions, the aircraft features a wide low-swept wing and under-wing mounted, high-bypass turbofan engines that produce a distinctively low-pitch sound, earning the plane the nickname "Hoover" (after the vacuum cleaner). After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the ASW role became less significant and the S-3 was increasingly used for surface warfare, surveilance and aerial refuelling missions before being retired from service in 2009. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
