Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II 82-0661 was c/n 709 and first assigned to the 353rd TFS/354th TFW Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, South Carolina. This aircraft participated in Operation Desert Storm with the 75th FS/23rd FW, Pope AFB, NC, was sent to AMARC on May 15, 2001 but returned to service July 19, 2001. The aircraft was in service until January 17, 2006 when it again was sent to AMARC. Once more it was returned to service but with the 23rd FS/23rd FW. In 2010 the 163rd FS, Indiana ANG “Blacksnakes” received their A-10 equipment and 82-0661 was part of it. In 201182-0661 was the Boss Bird. Designed to counter criticism that the US Air Force wasn't serious enough about close air support, the A-10 Thunderbolt II was first flown on May 10, 1972. The Thunderbolt II is a single-seat attack aircraft used to protect ground forces from tanks, armored vehicles and other ground targets. Nicknamed "Warthog," the A-10 is highly maneuverable at low speeds and low altitude and is capable of short take-offs and landings. It is designed for easy maintenance-many of its parts are interchangeable between the right and left side and it can operate from bases with limited facilities. The A-10 is expected to remain in service until 2028 or beyond. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
