The Airbus A400M Atlas is one of the most advanced tactical and strategic air transports in the skies today. Not only is it able to carry and deliver large and heavy payloads over long distances around the world as needed, it can even land on rough, unpaved landing strips and has also proven itself as a tanker for air-to-air refueling missions, enabling it to carry out the everchanging needs of today's armed forces. Despite their relatively small size, the Luxembourg armed forces, which regularly take part in international NATO operations, has designated an Airbus A400M Atlas for joint use as a transport as required with the recently established binational unit with Belgium.
Designed as a tactical/strategic airlifter replacement for the C-130 for several NATO countries, the A400M was first flown on December 11th, 2009. Like many Airbus commerical aircraft, the A400M features a full glass cockpit and a fly-by-wire control system with flight envelope protection. The airframe and wings make extensive use of composite materials while the engines turn high-efficiency eight-bladed scimitar propellers. Crewed by two pilots and one loadmaster, the A400M can be configured for cargo transport, troop transport, medical evacuation, aerial refuelling and electronic surveillance.
