USAF C-130H Hercules 89-9106, construction number 5223, served with the Air Force Reserve Command's 910th Airlift Wing at Youngstown Air Reserve Station, Ohio. Operated by the 757th Airlift Squadron, the aircraft supported tactical airlift, cargo transport, training, and the 910th AW's unique Department of Defense aerial spray mission. In 2007, 89-9106 was dedicated to Major Karl Hoerig, a fallen 910th Airlift Wing pilot, with his name applied above the crew entrance door. The aircraft subsequently departed on an aerial spray mission to Hill AFB. The versatile Hercules exemplified the 910th's specialized worldwide airlift and support capabilities. Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
