In 1954 at a cost of more than $2.6 million dollars Lockheed VC-121E serial 53-7885 was the one and only Lockheed VC-121E ever produced. This was the personal aircraft of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower between 1954 and 1961. During a ceremony held on November 24, 1954 Mrs. Eisenhower christened the aircraft Columbine III in honor of Colorado's state flower, her adopted home state. For five years after President Eisenhower left office the aircraft transported high level personnel before being retired to the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. Designed as a stretched version of the successful Constellation design, the Super Constellation was first flown on October 13th, 1950. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
