Originally conceived as a bomber, the Handley Page Victor was subsequently converted to the tanker role. In this role, it claimed much fame during the 1982 Falklands War, when it provided vital air-to-air refueling capability for Harriers and Hercules transitting between the UK and Ascension Island and on to the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Together with No. 57 Squadron, No. 55 Squadron deployed from Marham, Norfolk to Wideawake, Ascension Island on 18th April including XL511, which was flown by Wg. Cdr. C.C.B. Seymour. Tanking sorties with Harriers, Sea Harriers, Nimrods and Hercules were undertaken between Banjul and Ascension Island. One of SL511's most important roles was that of refueling the Vulcans involved in the "Black Buck" operations of bombing Stanley Airport overnight on 30th April/1st May. It refueled the first Nimrod MR,2P reconnaissance mission off the Argentine coast on 15th May and a further "Black Buck" Vulcan mission on 12th June, before returning to Marham on 30th June 1982. Designed in response to an Air Ministry requirement, the Victor was first flown on December 24th, 1952. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc. Corgi's 1:144 scale Victor is constructed almost entirely of diecast metal with only the smallest amount of plastic used, a quality common to most of Corgi's 1:144 series aircraft. The sleek fuselage features pad-printed windows and doors that do not interrupt the lines of the aircraft. The wing is loaded with detail and has large anti-shock pods on the top surface of the trailing edge, veined engine inlets on the leading edge and external fuel tanks below. Configuration for ground display is easy with landing gear that installs quickly, and there is also a multi-position display stand for in flight display. © Copyright 2003-2013 The Flying Mule, Inc. The Corgi "Aviation Archive" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made diecast models of military and civilian aircraft. The vast Aviation Archive range has become the standard by which all other diecast airplane ranges are judged. Each Corgi model is based on a specific aircraft from an important historical or modern era of flight, and has been authentically detailed from original documents and archival library material.
