2012 sees the 60th anniversary of the legendary Vulcan’s first flight in 1952. Going on to epitomise the RAF’s strategic bomber force during the cold war, the Vulcan served in a number of different roles throughout its service history. XH558 joined 230 OC U in July 1960. The twelfth B2 built, it was based first at RAF Finningley before moving almost immediately to RAF Waddington. Most of the squadron’s operational service was with the RAF Waddington wing, before being converted to the role of B2 Maritime Radar Reconnaissance in 1973 and then flying with 27 Squadron. It was later modified further to an air to air refuelling type, the K2 in 1982. Later XH558 returned to standard B2 configuration and it was the final Vulcan to be withdrawn from RAF service after being operated from 1986 as a display aircraft until budget cuts resulted in its retirement in 1992. Today XH558 flies with the Vulcan To The Sky trust.

Avro Vulcan B.Mk 2

Designed to meet an Air Ministry specification for a high-speed, high-altitude, long-range nuclear bomber, the Avro Vulcan was first flown on August 30, 1952. Though revolutionary, the Vulcan's original delta wing tailless design was an unknown quantity. The first prototype crashed in the fall of 1949 and the early straight leading edge design was later modified to kink towards the wingtip, giving the service aircraft superior flying characteristics. Carrying Britain's first nuclear weapon (the Blue Danube), the Vulcan's original role was nuclear deterrence, but it was later modified for air-to-air refueling missions and maritime radar reconnaissance.

Corgi's 1:144 scale Vulcan is constructed almost entirely of solid diecast metal. The top portion of model's fuselage and wing are cast as one solid piece, which gives this model a seamless look. The nose features a sturdy inflight-refuelling probe and pad printed cockpit windows with details of the crew access door below. The model's large wing has been masterfully rendered and features turbo fan blade details inside the skillfully shaped engine intakes. Configuration of the model for ground display is easy with landing gear that installs quickly, and there is also a multi-position display stand for in flight display.
