McDonnell Douglas DC-8-32, registered 9Q-CLE, was one of a pair of secondhand DC-8-33s that Pan Am sold to Air Congo in June 1969, joining sister aircraft 9Q-CLF to support the airline's long-haul international routes from Kinshasa. Air Congo took its name from the country's original post-independence name before Mobutu Sese Seko's 1971 authenticite campaign renamed the country Zaire, prompting the airline's rebrand to Air Zaire, though the DC-8s continued flying under their original scheme for a period afterward. As part of this fleet, 9Q-CLE supported the airline's central role in Central African aviation.
