CAAC Antonov An-26 808 was part of China's early fleet of Soviet designed twin turboprop transports. The An-26 combined the basic airframe of the An-24 with a large rear cargo door and loading ramp, making it suitable for transporting personnel, freight, vehicles, and other equipment. Chinese examples were used for transport and support duties during a period when CAAC performed both civil airline and government aviation functions. The rugged An-26 was particularly well suited to operations from smaller and less developed airfields throughout China. Its design also influenced Chinese transport aviation, complementing domestically produced aircraft derived from the closely related Antonov An-24 family.
