Oxford Diecast Oxford Aviation AC029
Supermarine Spitfire Mk I Diecast Model
RAF No.19 Sqn, Henry Cozens, RAF Duxford, England, 1938

1:72 Scale   Length   Width
Supermarine Spitfire Mk I   5"   6.25"

Spitfire MkI - Pre-WWII. 19 Squadron, RAF 19 Squadron was the first flying squadron of the RAF to receive the Spitfire MkI in August 1938. The squadron history is an interesting one, going back as far as September 1915, during which time it saw serive in WWI, right across Europe. Following the end of the Great War, the Squadron was disbanded but reformed in 1924 at Duxford. Here it remained during the inter-war years, flying a variety of bi-plane fighters until the arrival of their Spitfires. Our Oxford 1:72 scale example is typical of the pre-war delivery of Spitfires to No 19 Squadron. Decorated in the brown and green camouflage shceme, with silver (aluminum) underside, its number K9694 features on the sides and underbelly. The two-blade propeller has the detailed yellow tips and the exhausts pipes in front of the cockpit have been given an authentic rust brown finish. The rudder carries the No 19 on both sides and the RAF roundel in red, white and blue is printed on the underside. Note especially the extra band of yellow in the roundel on the top of the wings, which is totally accurate for this particular pre-war plane. This was to identify it more clearly against the camouflage colour scheme but once WWII broke out, it was gradually phased out because it became too conspicious, particularly in the face of the enemy.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk I

Designed by R.J.Michell to meet a British Air Ministry specification, the Supermarine Spitfire first flown on March 5th, 1936. With its combination of beautiful fighter design, the excellent performance of its Rolls-Royce Merlin powerplant and firepower provided by twin cannons and four machine guns, the Spitfire became an unrivaled symbol of victory. The Spitfire had 40 major variants and was built in greater numbers than any other British aircraft of the time. It flew operationally on every front between 1939 and 1945 and was engaged in every one of the Royal Air Force's major actions.
