The Focke Wulf 190 was a legendary German aircraft, able to out-climb, outrun and out-dive anything the RAF had at the time of its introduction. It was produced in many forms, including the A-8 powered by a BMW 801D-2 air-cooled radial engine. Introduced in February 1944, the A-8 could be fitted with bombs or a jettisonable 300-liter fuel tank. It also had a new wooden propeller with paddle-shaped blades, and a new "bubble" canopy design. An R2 kit was available to protect the plane with a 30mm-thick canopy and windscreen, 5mm-thick cockpit armor, plus it had upgraded MK108 30mm cannons. Dragon Warbirds has produced a model of an Fw190A-8/R2 before, and the latest release capitalizes on this. Item No. 50312 shows "Yellow 17", the aircraft of Oberfeldwebel Willi Unger from 12./JG 3, based at Barth in May 1944. Unger was an ace from JG 3 "Udet" and was credited with 24 aerial victories from 59 sorties. During the process he was shot down no less than three times. This superb 1/72 die-cast scale model is accurately molded, and replicates the markings and camouflage of 12.(Sturm)/JG 3. It features a detailed cockpit, which can be displayed to full advantage by the open cockpit option. However, what sets this item apart is the scenic base on which it's mounted. It shows a section of airfield at the height of a Western European summer. This diorama provides the perfect backdrop in which to set off the stunning aircraft model with its striped spinner and lightning motif on the cowling. Designed by Kurt Tank, the Fw-190A was first flown on June 1st, 1939. This small, yet ferociously-powered aircraft was fast and maneuverable and packed a fierce armament package earning it the nickname "Butcher Bird". The wide landing gear, excellent visibility and high-altitude paddle-bladed propeller endeared it to pilots familiar with the shortcomings of its predecessor - the Messerschmitt Bf 109. Some of the Luftwaffe's most famous fighter aces flew the Fw 190. Many variants were produced during the war, with the most notable being the inline-engine equipped and longer-nosed 190D, known as the "Dora." © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc. The mold for the Fw 190 also allows for both the early war "A" model and late war long-nose "D" model to be produced, with separate castings for each fuselage. The paint schemes are expertly airbrushed to bring out the subtleties of the panel lines, rivets, control surface detail and trim tabs. Pad-printed unit markings and finely detailed placards complete this historically accurate model. The elevators and rudder are hinged and movable, which is uncommon in 1:72 scale. The sliding canopy opens to reveal a fully detailed cockpit with pad-printed instruments and side panels. © Copyright 2003-2013 The Flying Mule, Inc.
