The V-1 flying bomb was an early cruise missile and the only production aircraft to use a pulsejet for power. It was known to the Allies as the buzz bomb, or doodlebug. The V-1 was developed at Peenemunde Army Research Center in 1939 by the Nazi German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Ground-launched V-1s were typically propelled up an inclined launch ramp by an apparatus known as a Dampferzeuger ("steam generator"), which reacted stabilized hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate (T-Stoff and Z-Stoff), the same combination of chemicals used as propellants for the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet rocket plane. Velocity for an operational V-1 was 360 mph as it left the end of the launch ramp. Designed as an pulse-jet powered cruise missile, the V-1 Flying Bomb was first test flown in 1942. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
