The Churchill infantry tank is a most distinctive design with its extremely long chassis and wraparound tracks. Named after the British minister of defense of the time, the Churchill tank was very well armored. It was produced in a series of versions that offered thicker armor and more powerful armament as the war progressed. The Mk.III, weighing in at 39,626kg, arrived on the scene in March 1942. It featured a 6-pounder gun in the all-welded turret, and the hull-mounted howitzer fitted in previous variants was deleted. Its baptism of fire was in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942, plus the Mk.III was also famously involved in the failed landing at Dieppe in northern France.
Designed as a heavy infantry tank to replace the Matilda II, the Churchill prototype was completed in June 1940 and the type entered production in June 1941. The design was largely influenced by the British Army's experiences with trench warfare during WWI. As a result, the Churchill was a large, heavy (38 tons), and relatively slow machine, built to traverse heavily cratered landscapes to take on lightly armored infantry. The small turret significantly restricted the size of armament that could be fitted to the Churchill but it's heavy armor made it much more resilient than contemporary allied tanks. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Dragon's 1:72 scale Churchill tanks have hulls and turrets constructed entirely of diecast plastic, allowing for the greatest possible details, such as rivet and bolt head details. Each release features a 360-degree rotating turret with delicate antenna and periscopes on top and a clear view of each of the models the twenty-two road wheels and coil-spring suspension. Releases in this series include the early Mk III welded plate turret and the rounded edges of the cast style of the Mk IV turret. Additional details include subtle airbrush weathering and hand paint tools such as axe, shovel and tow cables.
