The M3 first saw action against Rommel's forces in North Africa, in 1942. It battled on every front, fighting for the armies of United States, United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, eventually replaced by the superior M4 Sherman tank series. The M3 had an unusual turret design with the main weapon -a 75Â mm gun- in an off center mounting in the hull. A small cupola on top held a machine gun, giving the effect of one turret on top of another. Unhappy with the tall profile, The British, had their own turret fitted-this one lower in profile with a bustle at the back for the radio set.
