Designed in response to the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank, the FV215 was to be a Heavy Gun Tank based on the FV214 Conqueror. Weighing in at 66 tonnes with a 120mm Gun, the Conqueror was one of the largest and heaviest tanks Britain would ever field. The FV215 was to use the same basic chassis design as the Conqueror to carry a 183mm Gun on a rear-mounted turret. Although work began on a prototype in 1955, the British Army was not enthusiatic about the logistical issues presented by supporting such a large-calibered weapon. With the potential of new Anti-Tank Guided Missiles now being realized, the Heavy Tank Destroyer fell out of favor and the project was officially cancelled in 1957.
Designed as a heavy tank basted on the FV214 Conqueror, the FV215 never made it into production. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
