The Sd.Kfz. 3 Maultier (Mule) was the name given to series of half-track trucks used by Germans during World War II. Most Maultier conversions were based on Opel trucks, which proved successful in service. While lacking the overall mobility of purpose-built half tracks they were cheaper and sufficiently effective.
Designed as a half-track conversion of the popular Opel Blitz truck, the Maultier (Mule) entered production in 1942. The advancing German army quickly realized that 4-wheel drive vehicles were no match for the wet and muddy conditions encountered on the Eastern Front in wintertime. Consequently, Opel Blitz trucks were hastily converted to half-track configuration using left over Panzer I track assemblies. In some cases, the conversion was even carried out in the field. The resulting vehicle was neither fast nor maneuverable but it served its purpose and kept supply chains moving in less than ideal conditions. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
