The Heavy Tank M26 Pershing was an American heavy tank used in World War II briefly and in the Korean War. It was named after General John Pershing, who led the American Expeditionary Force in Europe in World War I. Development of the M26 during World War II was prolonged by a number of factors, the most important being opposition to the tank from Army Ground Forces (AGF). As a result, only the initial 20 M26 (T26E3) tanks deployed to Europe in January 1945 saw combat in World War II. With a 90mm gun mounted in a massive turret the M26 was a tank with huge firepower. Unfortunately M26 was underpowered and mechanically unreliable and so was withdrawn in favor of the M46, which had a more powerful engine.
Originally designed as an upgrade to the medium tank M4 Sherman, the M26 Pershing first entered service in 1945. A series of prototypes led to the final design, but the overall development of the Pershing was hindered by Army Ground Forces opposition. The M26 was the US Army's first operational heavy tank, but it was unreliable and underpowered, so its service was limited (only 20 Pershings were deployed during WWII, and the model was withdrawn from Korea in favor of the more powerful M46). Though not in itself a success, the M26 gave rise to other more successful heavy tanks such as the M47, M48 and M60 Patton tanks. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Forces of Valor's 1:32 scale M26 Pershing has hand-applied weathering effects and a diecast metal 360 degree rotating turret, cannon and upper hull. Among this model's many moving parts are opening gunner and commander's hatches, an elevating cannon with hollow muzzle brake and a rotating cannon. There are two opening hatches at the front of the hull and six hinged panels at the rear exposing the engine and transmission. Other fine details include battle damaged shirt and fenders, a 50 cal machine gun, removable crew figure and rolling rubber tracks and wheel with active suspension. Casting effects have been applied on the glacis plate and on the turret.
