The 5th Infantry Division chose the letter "Y" as their divisional sign, symbolic of their county Yorkshire. In March 1942 the 5th began their long string of combat in Madagascar, India, Iraq, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Sicily, Italy, back Egypt and Palestine. Finally they ended up in North-West Europe. In July 1943 the 5th ID took part in the invasion of Sicily as well as in September 1943 they participated in the landings in Italy. The 5th were involved in combats at The Sangro, Garigliano Crossing, Anzio and finally Rome itself.
Designed by Guy Motors to tow medium artillery such as the 17 pounder anti-tank gun and the 25 pounder gun-howitzer, the Morris C8 Quad was introduced in 1939. Demand for this British artillery tractor was greater than Guy's production capacity, so Morris and other manufacturers took over production, together building more than 10,000 C8 vehicles. The C8 was used by Britain and its Commonwealth forces throughout WWII and into the Korean War. It was crewed by one man but could carry up to five passengers. The C8 had a top speed of just under 50mph and a range of about 160 miles. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
