The FC-1 was designed as a low-cost multirole fighter for the export market to replace Russian MiG-21, Chinese F-7 and American F-5 fighters. Designed with help from Mikoyan and powered by Russian RD-93 turbofan engines, the FC-1 features fly-by-wire controls and Beyond Visual Range combat capabililty. Three prototypes currently exist although the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation has teamed up with the Pakistani Aeronautical Complex to produce 16 production aircraft in 2006.
