The T-72 is a Soviet-designed main battle tank that entered production in 1970. It is developed directly from Obyekt-172, and shares parallel features with the T-64A. The T-72 is one of the most widely produced post-World War Two tank, second only to the T-54/55 family, and the basic design has also been further developed as the T-90. Designed to complement the T-64, the high-production Soviet T-72 was first built in 1971 and first seen in public in 1977. This medium tank is a combat vehicle with cross-country maneuverability. Powered by a V-12 diesel engine that can run on various fuels, the T-72 can be fitted with two fuel drums for additional range. Its low, rounded turret mounts a 125mm smooth bore gun capable of penetrating the M1 Abrams' armor at up to 1,000 meters. It can sustain direct hits from the M1 at a 2,000 meter range. Armed with anti-aircraft machine guns, the T-72 can also destroy low-flying targets. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
