The Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) operates the Ilyushin Il-76 as one of its primary heavy strategic airlifters. Introduced in the 1990s, the aircraft provides the PLAAF with long-range transport capability for troops, vehicles, and large cargo. Most Chinese Il-76s are the Il-76MD variant acquired from Russia and former Soviet states. With a payload capacity of roughly 40 tons, the aircraft supports military logistics, humanitarian relief, and overseas deployments. The Il-76 airframe also serves as the basis for specialized platforms such as the KJ-2000 airborne early warning aircraft. Although newer transports like the Xian Y-20 are entering service, the Il-76 remains an important asset in PLAAF strategic airlift operations.
Designed as a successor to the Antanov An-12, the Il-76 was first flown on March 25th, 1971. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
