Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia needed to find a lower-cost alternative to the Su-35 and Su-37 designs. The Su-30KN was a proposed mid-life upgrade to expand and enhance the air-to-ground capabilities of the exisiting fleet of Su-30 airframes. Costs were contained by focusing development efforts on avionics advancements and avoiding modifications to the airframe and powerplant systems. An Su-30 was converted into the Su-30KN prototype and first flew in March 1999. This aircraft was repainted in a striking three-tone gray camouflage scheme and was coded "White 302".
Please note: An optional display stand is available separately if you wish to display this model "in-flight".
Designed as two-seat multi-role variant of the Su-27, the Su-30 was first flown (as the Su-27PU) on December 31, 1989. The design grew from a Soviet need for a long-range interceptor based on the Su-27 with the addition of a second pilot and retractable in-flight refuelling probe. Similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Su-30 is still a highly capable Air Superiority Fighter while an advanced avionics suite make it formidable in the Air-to-Ground Strike Fighter role. The Su-30 has spawned numerous sub-variants, including several designed for the export market. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Witty's 1:72 scale Su-30 is a large, heavy model made primarily of diecast metal, with plastic used only in those areas requiring the finest detail. Subtle panel lines and rivet details cover the surface of the model, and are even present on the underside. Moving parts include an opening hinged canopy, deployable speed brake with metal actuator support arm and movable rudders. The highly-detailed landing gear has separately-applied transparent landing lights, and structural and hydraulic line details are visible inside the wheel wells. Other fine details can be seen inside the engine intake, on the simulated heat shielding and on the arrestor hook.
