XP924 was originally an FAW.Mk 2 and served with 899 NAS aboard the HMS Eagle from 1964 to 1972 before being retired from frontline service and converted to a D.Mk 3 Target Drone. Retired from drone duties in 1991, the aircraft is the only flying Sea Vixen in the world, operated by De Havilland Aviation and based in Bournemouth International Airport. As a result of a sponsorship deal, the aircraft was flown for three years in "Red Bull" colors before being returned to 899 NAS colors in 2007. XP924 is currently on the airshow circuit once more with additional funding courtesy of the Royal Navy.
Designed to meet a Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm requirement for an all-weather, high-speed jet fighter, the de Havilland DH.110 Sea Vixen was first flown on September 26, 1951. This carrier-based fighter had twin booms and was the first British aircraft to be armed only with missiles, bombs and rockets. It carried four air-to-air missiles, two unguided rocket packs, and was also capable of carrying four 500 lb or two 1,000 lb bombs. The Sea Vixen was used for two Royal Navy aerobatic teams, but it never served in a war and is perhaps best remembered for its radical design and distinctive appearance. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Witty's 1:72 scale Sea Vixen is smartly constructed with a blended mix of diecast metal and plastic components. The upper half of the wing and fuselage are constructed in diecast metal with the bottom of the fuselage and entire twin boom constructed in plastic, providing balance when the model is configured for ground display. The nose of the model highlights the unusual offset canopy with the simulated observer’s flush fitting rectangular shaped "Coal Hole" canopy on the right. The model can be easily configured for ground display, or mounted to its positionable all-metal display stand.
