Unimax Forces of Valor 86001
Bismarck Class Battleship Diecast Model
German Navy, Bismarck, Poland, 1941

Bismarck Class Battleship   10"   1.5"

At the time she was commissioned in the summer of 1940, the German battleship Bismarck was the largest warship ever completed. Displacing 50,000 tons fully loaded, Bismarck was well armed and had superior qualities of endurance, which made her particularly well suited to her role as a commerce raider. Despite these advantages, however, her career was cut short during her first mission. Assigned to intercept convoys traveling between the United Kingdom and North America, Bismarck sunk the British battlecruiser HMS Hood in the Denmark Straight, and was herself sunk two days later by a retaliating force of British ships and Swordfish biplanes.

Bismarck-class Battleship

Built at the onset of the Second World War, Germany's two Bismarck-class battleships were the fourth largest ever completed. Originally envisioned as fast raiders, refinements in armament and propulsion led to a reduction in range and cruising speed, making both ships inferior to those serving in the British fleet. The completed Bismarck ships had a displacement of nearly 42,000 tons, a top speed of 30 knots, and a main battery of eight 15-inch guns. Instead of engaging enemy battleships directly, Bismarck and her sister ship, Tirpitz, were assigned to convoy raiding missions, where they were better suited.

Forces of Valor's 1:1000 scale Bismarck Class Battleship is constructed of diecast metal and plastic, with metal used for the lower portion of the hull and plastic for the upper portion. Simulated wood decking, conning tower and guns are recreated in plastic, providing the highest possible level of detail. The rotating main turrets located forward and aft each feature two elevating 15-inch cannons. The super structure is packed with details such as hand painted life boats, delicate antennas and mast. Two Arado 196 floatplanes are ready for catapult launch in the center, and the aft features three nicely detailed propeller screws and twin rudders below.
