ZS-SAJ was a Boeing 747-344 delivered to South African Airways in 1983, part of the airline's effort to modernize its long-haul fleet during the 1980s. Featuring the stretched upper deck unique to the 747-300, it operated key intercontinental routes to Europe and Asia during the apartheid-era restrictions, often requiring creative multi-stop routings. The aircraft carried SAA's classic orange, blue, and white livery before later receiving the airline's updated post-1994 colors. ZS-SAJ served reliably for nearly two decades before being retired in the early 2000s as newer 747-400s and Airbus widebodies took over major long-distance services.
Designed as a large capacity airliner and freight hauler, the 747 was first flown on February 9th, 1969. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
