The second jet aircraft specifcally configured for use by the President of the United States was a VC-137 (a modified Boeing 707), serial number 72-7000, purchased in 1972. It used the callsign "Air Force One" when the President was on board, "SAM 27000" otherwise.

Designed as a military VIP transport version of the 707, the C-137 was first flown in 1959.
