Armee de l'Air Escadron de Chasse 1/2 Cigognes operated the Dassault Mirage IIIC during the 1960s as part of France's frontline air defense force. Aircraft coded 2-ED was one of the Mirage IIIC fighters assigned to EC 1/2, based at Dijon. The Mirage IIIC was a supersonic interceptor designed for high speed climb and rapid reaction alert missions. It carried air to air missiles and cannon armament for national air defense duties during the Cold War. EC 1/2 maintained constant readiness, with 2-ED representing the squadron's role in protecting French airspace and supporting NATO commitments. Designed to meet a French government specification for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor, the Dassault Mirage III was first flown on November 17, 1956. This supersonic aircraft has a tailless delta wing configuration and is capable of high speeds (a Mirage IIIA was the first European aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight). It has a provision for a SEPR liquid-fuel rocket engine, which provides additional burst thrust.
