US Navy Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14 (HM-14) "Vanguard" specializes in airborne mine countermeasures. Using the MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters, HM-14 conducts mine detection, sweeping, and neutralization to ensure safe naval operations and the protection of sea lanes. Established in 1987, the squadron is based at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, and deploys globally to support U.S. and coalition operations. In addition to mine countermeasures, HM-15 performs secondary missions like heavy-lift transport, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and vertical replenishment, making it a versatile unit in both combat and peacetime operations.
Designed to meet a US Marine Corps requirement for a heavy-lift transpory helicopter to replace the CH-37 Mojave, the CH-53 was first flown on October 14th, 1964. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
