The M998 HMMWV is the baseline Cargo/Troop Carrier of the HMMWV family. It is are equipped with basic armor and is used to transport equipment, materials, and/or personnel. The cargo carrier configuration is capable of transporting a payload (including crew) of 2,500 pounds and the troop carrier is capable of transporting a two man crew and eight passengers. In 1981 the US government awarded AM General the contract for 55,000 HMMWVs. This High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) has assumed the military role previously filled by Jeep and is produced in several configurations: command and control systems, field ambulance, ammunition and troop and general cargo transport. Optional equipment includes a winch and supplemental armor. Variant armament carriers provide mounting and firing capabilities for heavy machine guns.
