The M1A2 TUSK Abrams combines the advanced digital architecture of the M1A2 with the Tank Urban Survival Kit, tailored for high threat urban combat. TUSK adds reactive armor on turret sides, slat armor over the engine deck, armored crew shields, and a loader’s thermal sight for improved close range awareness. A remote weapon station enhances protection while engaging infantry threats. Retaining the M1A2’s commander’s independent thermal viewer, improved networking, and 120 mm main gun, the M1A2 TUSK offers superior situational awareness, firepower, and survivability. It proved especially effective during operations in Iraq, where urban threats demanded enhanced protection and rapid target detection. General Dynamics delivered the first M1 Abrams to the U.S. Army in 1980. The Abrams is a full tracked, low profile land combat system possessing a high degree of armor protection, lethal firepower, maneuverability and agility. It is built primarily from sturdy rolled homogeneous armor steel plates, sandwiched around thicker protective material. Its four man crew is aided by an array of sensors that constantly monitor the tank's tilt, the turret's motion and any gusts of wind; a computer adjusts the gun accordingly to keep it aimed at its target.
