The M1A1 TUSK (Tank Urban Survival Kit) is a combat upgrade package designed to improve Abrams survivability and effectiveness in urban warfare. Introduced during operations in Iraq, TUSK adds reactive armor tiles to the turret sides, slat armor for the rear engine compartment, and armored shields for the loader and commander. It also includes a thermal sight for the loader, a remote weapon station, and enhanced crew protection against RPGs and small arms fire. While retaining the M1A1’s 120 mm gun and mobility, TUSK significantly improves close range situational awareness and survivability in dense, urban combat environments. General Dynamics delivered the first M1 Abrams to the U.S. Army in 1980. The Abrams is a full tracked, low profile land combat system possessing a high degree of armor protection, lethal firepower, maneuverability and agility. It is built primarily from sturdy rolled homogeneous armor steel plates, sandwiched around thicker protective material. Its four man crew is aided by an array of sensors that constantly monitor the tank's tilt, the turret's motion and any gusts of wind; a computer adjusts the gun accordingly to keep it aimed at its target. With this system, the M1 can take out other tanks while on the move. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
