Boeing 777-289, construction number 27630, was delivered to Japan Airlines as JA8985 in the late 1990s. The aircraft operated high demand domestic trunk routes within Japan, including Tokyo Haneda to Sapporo and Fukuoka, replacing older widebody types. Configured for dense domestic service, JA8985 featured JAL's two class layout with Class J and economy seating. Powered by Pratt and Whitney PW4000 engines, the 777-200 offered improved efficiency and reliability. JA8985 served as a backbone of JAL's domestic fleet before retirement as newer aircraft such as the A350-900 gradually replaced earlier 777 variants.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection. Standard varients have a range of 4,200 nautical miles while Extended Range (ER) variants can fly for 6,600 nautical miles and the Longer Range (LR) variant is the world's longest range airliner capable of flying 7,800 nautical miles. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
