In early March 1945 Stab./JG 301 became the first unit to receive the Focke-Wulf Ta 152, with an operational brief to provide top cover for the Jagdwaffe airfields in the area. On March 22nd, Kommodore Fritz Aufhammer, flew this machine to the Focke-Wulf factory at Rechlin for a Ta 152 meeting. To survive the trigger happy German Flak crews along the way, flying a new and unfamiliar type, he ordered that the machine be painted red.
Designed as a high-altitude interceptor enhancement of the Fw 190D, the Ta 152 was first flown in the fall of 1944. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
