This latest addition to our Oxford Aviation range is the Morane Saulnier 405C - a French aircraft, as flown during the early years of WWII. Our version of the 406C is as flown by the Escadron D'Entrainement (Vichy French Air Force) as flying out of Toulouse in 1941. The upper side is decorated in light beige, green and brown camouflage with a white band round the rear fuselage. The underside is painted a light blue and the tail fins have red and yellow banding, a colour feature which also appears on the front fuselage behind the black nose cone. The French red, white and blue colour scheme is depicted on the upright section of the tail fin, over which is printed detailed black lettering MS 406C1 No. 775 and a series of initials, ending with Essence/Huile. The red, white and blue Air Force roundels also appear on both the upper and lower wing tips. The propeller spinner and blades are finished in matt black with finely printed white bands on the blades. Designed to meet a 1934 French Air Ministry requirement for a single-seat fighter, the MS.406 was first flown on August 8th, 1935 (as the MS.405). With more than 1100 examples produced, the MS.406 formed the backbone of the French Air Force at the beginning of WWII. The aircraft was small and manoeuverable but lacked the power and armament of the German Bf 109Es that it typically confronted. Loses were high during the Battle of France and despite efforts to destroy remaining airframes, large numbers were captured by advancing German forces and used by the Luftwaffe as trainers. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
