Boeing 757-260, registered ET-AKF, was delivered to Ethiopian Airlines in October 1992 as one of three brand-new 757-200s the carrier acquired in the early 1990s, configured with 144 economy and 16 business class seats. The aircraft flew passenger service for two decades before Ethiopian withdrew it in 2012, after which it served with the Ethiopian Air Force before entering storage. Ethiopian Airlines ultimately operated ten passenger-carrying 757s across two waves of acquisitions spanning the early 1990s and mid-2000s, using the type to support both domestic Ethiopian routes and regional African connections during a formative period of the carrier's expansion.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
