Boeing 757-223(PCF), registered VQ-BGG, was originally delivered to American Airlines in 1995 before conversion to a freighter between 2018 and 2020, subsequently joining Aviastar-TU's fleet in 2020 wearing the corporate livery of Chinese logistics company Cainiao Network, part of the Alibaba Group. Although the aircraft was intended to be re-registered RA-73353, this change was never completed, and the aircraft has since been placed in storage. VQ-BGG's career illustrates the extensive secondhand conversion market for retired American 757s, many of which found extended service lives as freighters supporting Chinese e-commerce logistics operations after their original passenger careers ended.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
