Boeing 757-2S7, registered N606RC, was delivered to the original Republic Airlines wearing Northwest livery with a distinctive detail: its left engine cowling bore Royal Brunei markings, a quirk of the aircraft leasing and paint-shop practices common in the 1980s. Republic and merger partner Northwest Airlines both saw the 757 as central to their domestic fleet strategy, prioritizing frequency of service over larger aircraft. Following Republic's 1986 absorption into Northwest, N606RC continued flying in the combined carrier's colors, representing one of the more visually distinctive examples of the brief transitional period between the two airlines' separate identities.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
