Boeing 757-2S7, registered N605RC, was delivered new to the original Republic Airlines in polished Northwest metal colors in July 1986, shortly before Republic's merger into Northwest Airlines later that year. Both Republic and Northwest had independently ordered the 757 as their new domestic technology flagship during the 1980s, betting on high-frequency service with mid-size twinjets over larger but less frequent aircraft. As part of this shared fleet strategy that outlived the Republic brand itself, N605RC transitioned into full Northwest Airlines service following the merger, continuing to fly under the combined carrier's colors for years afterward.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
