Boeing 757-2S7, registered N604RC, flew for the original Republic Airlines, a Minneapolis-based carrier that ordered the 757 alongside its eventual merger partner Northwest Airlines in the 1980s, both viewing the new twinjet as a domestic technology flagship. Following Republic's 1986 merger into Northwest Airlines, N604RC transitioned through Northwest's livery, having previously flown wearing transitional colors captured in period photographs from the merger process. As part of the original Republic 757 fleet, the aircraft represented the carrier's ambitious fleet modernization strategy shortly before Republic ceased to exist as an independent airline brand.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
