Boeing 777-21BER, registered B-2057, serial number 27604, flew for China Southern Airlines wearing the name "Pearl of the South," part of the carrier's original 777-200ER fleet supporting long-haul international routes from China. The aircraft became associated with a commemorative tribute to a notable transpacific ETOPS flight in the carrier's history, reflecting the pioneering role the extended-range 777-200ER played in enabling China Southern's long-distance twin-engine operations across the Pacific. After retirement, the aircraft was ferried to storage at Goodyear, Phoenix, joining several other retired China Southern 777-200ERs at the Arizona desert facility.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection.
