Airbus A320-232, registered VH-VFF, serial number 5039, flies for Jetstar Airways as part of the Qantas-owned low-cost carrier's substantial A320 fleet supporting domestic Australian and short-haul international routes. Jetstar was established as Qantas's response to the competitive threat posed by Virgin Blue, forming one half of the Qantas Group's dual-brand strategy alongside full-service Qantas Airways. As of the mid-2010s, Jetstar carried a significant share of all passengers traveling in and out of Australia, with its A320 fleet, including VH-VFF, forming the backbone of the airline's low-cost domestic and regional network.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
