Boeing 747SP-J6, registered B-2442, serial number 21932, was delivered to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in 1980, serving the state aviation authority's long-haul international routes before the 1987-88 breakup of CAAC into separate regional carriers transferred the aircraft to the newly formed Air China. The specialized shortened 747SP variant offered CAAC exceptional range for connecting China to distant international destinations during an era before China's aviation industry was decentralized. B-2442 continued flying for Air China until 1999, after which it was sold, re-registered N135SW, and eventually scrapped at Victorville, California, in 2003.
Known during development as the 747SB (short-body), the 747SP (special performance) was designed to meet a 1973 joint request from Pan American World Airways and Iran Air for a long-range, high-capacity airliner. The SP variant had a fuselage that was shortended by 47 feet while retaining the engines and fuel tank capacity, yeilding a higher speed and longer range than existing 747 variants. The 747SP first entered service with Pan Am in 1976 and in the years that followed, its record-setting range enabled Pan Am to offer the longest non-stop flights in the world, including New York - Tokyo, San Francisco - Hong Kong and Los Angeles - Sydney. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
